Today’s National Basketball Association (NBA) championship winner receives and retains a specially created trophy for obtaining the top ranking in the league, though this was not always the case. From 1949 through 1976, the championship trophy for the NBA finals’ winner was the same from year to year, changing hands each time a new team achieved championship status.

Between 1949 and 1963, the original trophy was simply called the NBA Finals trophy; however, in 1964 it was renamed in honor of Walter A. Brown following his death that same year.
